Sunday 02 September

We are on the road just after 10 today and it's not raining. However as we get to Stara Fuzina the rain is torrential! Our route takes us up and up through forests with huge heavy drops of rain thumping on our rain hoods. We see a fire salamander crossing our path. Apparently they only appear in the rain! Ever upwards we go through the beech and pine forest until we get to the Dom for hot chocolate and a warm up by the wood burner. They have the same Austro Hungarian heater which is fed with logs from the kitchen as we have back at our hotel. We carry on upwards for another couple of hours until we reach the Dom by the lake. There's something about these Slovenian place names that makes them impossible to remember; this one's called Koca na Planini pro jezerru. We have what will probably be our first of many bowls of the local Slovenian dish of rivec; pearl barley, beans in a brothy sort of stew, with a mug of sweet tea without milk. Very welcome. The Austro Hungarian heater is on here and so it's nice and cosy and we dry off. As we leave the sun comes out and we even get into our shorts for the long descent. We make a short detour for vertiginous views of lake Bohinj .
We return to the Devil's bridge and follow the leat back to Stara Fuzina, with its impressive array of old wooden hay racks, slightly lopsided with age ( a bit like us). Then we return to Bohinj lake, looking atmospheric in the late afternoon sun, for a draught Lasko before getting back to base about 8 hours later!
We are heading off tomorrow into the Slovenian wilds for several days so will update the blog later. With no showers availabe and only limited water we may be a bit smelly!
